Mechanism of action
The anti depressive activity of Saint John’s Wort is due to the presence of the substance called hypericine which increases the concentration of neuro- transmitters in the central nervous system including serotonine, the response of serotonine is amplified by hypericine. It may have a mild inhibitory effect on the action of MAO A and B and, besides the inhibition of the secretion of cortisol, the product blocks hormonal catabolism. It also inhibits the reuptake of serotonine in the synaptic space

Adverse effects
Photosensitivity (dose dependent).

Contraindications
Precaution in patients taking digoxine. Do not use in patients with other anti-depressive drugs, narcotics and sedatives
Do not use during pregnancy or lactation
